The following are just some of the opportunities available to English students at Penn State Altoona:
- Opportunity to study with faculty writers who have published award-winning novels, books of poetry, short-story collections, and nonfiction books.
- Learn from our Emerging Writer in Residence and from a regular slate of prominent visiting writers.
- Research and write for the Black Writers of Pennsylvania Database Project, an online literary encyclopedia.
- Design, edit, promote, and submit creative work or art to Hard Freight, the college's student literary magazine.
- Become a member of Sigma Tau Delta, the International English Honor Society.
- Opportunity to be nominated for Liszka Awards which recognize students for excellent accomplishments in writing, theatrical performance, and technical support. The Liszka Awards are named in honor of Tom Liszka and Marlene Liszka who retired from Penn State Altoona in 2012.
- Opportunity to work with faculty scholars on their research projects.
- Earn credit for helping to organize the annual African American Read-In.
- Learn about career and graduate school opportunities in professional writing and rhetoric.
- Receive training in tutoring to serve as a paid writing consultant in the Writing Commons, our campus writing center.
